Education In Human Values - A Whole School Approach
Character the end product of education
Our school's theme of loving and learning together connects us with our priority of character development. From character emerges human excellence, which is the school's Mission. When we engage with our own conscience, loving and learning take off together. We all aim to model the human values of love, truth, right conduct, peace and non-violence so that we elicit these values that are in the heart of every child. Each of us are human and so loving and learning together requires lots of forgiveness, compassion and understanding. We all learn from each other and need to be open to experience our own conscience.
Academic excellence flows naturally in a loving environment and EHV is a natural learning process that integrates values into all aspects of the human personality
Human Values live in the conscience of each person.
Making moment-by-moment decisions from an individual's own conscience is fundamental to this school's philosophy.
Our School's explicit focus for term 2 will be on the value of Peace, which is love as feelings in each human being. Whilst the worlds agitations continue, connecting with eternal, universal, inclusive values is extremely important and the Sathya Sai Primary School's main priority is to model human values. Staff ensure that they will model the 5 human values in our thoughts, words and actions.
Examples of Whole School Approach:
1. Water Management:
The whole school staff and P&F are preparing for a term focused on water management. This will be assisted by the Institute of Sathya Sai Education in Canberra in some lesson plans trialled by masters student Kris Varma prior to a planned visit by delegates from the education department in China reviewing EHV for water management in Asia. This will be hosted by Drs Pal and Tehseen Dhall. We look forward to lots of P&F involvement in this exciting area with lots of skilled and wise people in our local community.
2. Literacy and Numeracy: the 5R's
Our whole school focus is on character development and academic excellence. This puts literacy and numeracy flowing through values, at the heart of our academic and behavioural directions and provides the measurable outcome of human values education. The school has been fully benchmarked for literacy and we are working towards the same goal for numeracy.
Staff are very delighted to see the great lift in concentration and literacy levels happening in classes. Our short term goal is for a national literacy and numeracy award in August 2007. Our long term goal is safe and happy children achieving their full potential with love.
3. Whole school community and values
We are currently clustering with Wollumbin High School and Murwillumbah Primary School and have applied for stage 2 values funding from the National Curriculum Corporation to further develop a whole school community integration of values as the template for strategic directions, teaching and learning strategies, policy directions, discipline and full school curriculum.
4. Development of the EHV Model
Under the direction of Drs Pal and Tehseen Dhall, we are piloting strength-based teaching and learning through the 7 teaching techniques: silent sitting, stories, songs, quotes and affirmations, activities, mind mapping and visualisation. Our focus is on creating an innovative space for optimal learning, with no school fees and a spirit-infused focus on education in human values.
