Integration of Values and Curriculum
Human values are innate qualities—Sathya Sai Baba
There are five universal human values: Love, Truth, Right Action, Peace and Non-violence. These 5 human values form the structural template underpinning all school policies, teaching and learning practices and curriculum priorities. Values include the values contained in the National Values Framework of the Australian Government values agenda 2005, including care and compassion, doing your best, fair go, freedom, honesty and trustworthiness, integrity, respect, responsibility, understanding, tolerance and inclusion.
All school activities provide evidence of integration of the five human values into the curriculum. The following examples are given:
- Demonstration of human values by teachers, teacher-aides, support and ancillary staff, along with parents participating in classes, all of which elicit human excellence throughout the whole school community;
- A loving and nurturing environment for the growth of character, the development of noble ideals and the enrichment of virtues;
- A developed, innovative curriculum based on the Institute of Sathya Sai Education Education in Human Values Model (EHV) that refines the integration of EHV into the NSW Board of Studies curriculum and into the school culture;
- Current best practice teaching and learning methodologies providing student-centred learning through the EHV seven teaching techniques;
- Opportunities for responsible citizenship through a focus on the integration of the Human Values of Love, Truth, Right Conduct, Peace and Non-Violence incorporating the Australian National Values Framework in curricular and extra-curricular activities;
- A better understanding of all cultures and religious beliefs, and a sense of unity whilst celebrating diversity is gained through EHV. The school is infused with spirituality through the language of values and is non-denominational. The EHV philosophy is based around Unity of all Faiths;
- A challenging and innovative curriculum, syllabus, staff development systems, strategic action plan and policies, leadership culture with professional management systems that promote academic excellence through character development;
- Encouragement of parent-teacher-school cooperation and the promotion of community involvement in local, state and national education clusters;
- An opportunity for parents to play an active role in the integrated development of a socially conscious and ethically mature student.
Value of the Fortnight
Human Values are innate within the human person. Children need to acquire the language which describes their behaviour and their choices, for behaviour always shows what is important to a child. At Sathya Sai Primary School, we teach human values by example and by whole school integration of the value of the week. Children are introduced to the new value or sub-value weekly, and the "Value of the Fortnight" is integrated into our lessons, our playground, our sports, in all that we do. Here are some examples of past values integrated into the whole school:.
