Sathya Sai Schools - The Five Human Values

Sathya Sai Spiritual Education

(Message from Dr Pal Dhall [Director of Institute of Sathya Sai Education, chairperson of Board of Governors Sathya Sai Primary School] as printed in the School Magazine, 2009)

The unique and characteristic feature of Sathya Sai Education at the Sathya Sai Primary School are the five Human Values of Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Non-violence. They appear simple and straightforward, as indeed they are at the kindergarten and primary levels. However, they are the visible aspects of a beautiful and rich philosophy of life, a philosophy that proclaims that the entire creation, of which we are a part, is manifestation of Oneness. These Human Values are expressions of a fundamental interconnection that every individual has at any given moment with everything and everyone within an all-embracing Ultimate State of Oneness.

Sathya Sai Baba asks, "What exactly is Education?" and then gives the answer, "It means opening wide the doors of the mind. It means cleansing the inner tool of consciousness, the senses, ego and reason." He also says that Education is for cultivating both the mind and the heart. It is to raise children with a lively conscience so that they can discern Truth from untruth, Eternal from transient, right from wrong, and so guide their lives grounded in peace, love, joy and harmony. Indeed SSEHV is the means to create harmony of head, heart and hand. It is to be noted that the Sathya Sai School in Australia is open to all denominations, is free of cost to the parents and actively fosters spirituality as the common denominator of all religions.

In common with all the Sathya Sai Schools around the world, the Australian Sai School combines the five Human Values without any compromise of the mainstream syllabus set by the Board of Studies. This "combined education" (also called 'integral education') prepares the child both for a rich inner life of joy and harmony with an outer capacity of action. The child develops a strong sense of personal responsibility grounded in an authentic self that is autonomous and yet strongly connected with the family, community and culture of origin. Such a child is better able to chart individual course through life with a well-developed inner compass. The training of the mind and heart that will make the right choices starts right in the kindergarten and the primary schools.
