Sathya Sai Schools Logo The Five Human Values

Education and Human Values

Educators and parents face significant challenges. All societies seek to transmit the nature and source of values that govern desireable behaviours. Educators need a good understanding of the beliefs and practices that the community treasures.

Transmission of human values in the curriculum engages all domains of the human person; the social, intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual domains. These domains correspond to the inherent human values within every person. Complementary strategies are needed to effectively transmit human values. The most critical of these strategies is teachers and parents both being role models of human values. Human values are explicit (seen, observed, acted out) and implicit (understood as the bases for choices and actions) in every action we undertake. Thus, every curricular area in the school is involved in transmission of human values. This is the meaning of a whole school approach.

The whole school approach involves students, staff, parents, school management, and advisors all practising the agreed values. In the school, all procedures, relationships, welfare policies uphold and honour the agreed values. The children participate in community service activities on a regular basis. This is cultivating social conscience through community service. The school engages in monitoring the integration of human values with continuous audit, evaluation and evolution.

The school philosophy aimed at eliciting character and academic excellence in each child is achieved by the integration of human values into all aspects of the curriculum, particularly the teaching and learning processes. Our staff's primary service is to provide a safe and happy whole school environment in which your children thrive. In a global world, information is about quantity whilst this school's ethos is focused on self-transformation, which is about quality. Information is clustered knowledge. When knowledge is experienced, it becomes wisdom and manifests in our character.

Value for the week: Non-violence
Sub-value: Understanding

Quote: "First understand, then adapt."

Understanding is the most subtle, and so most powerful, form of non-violence. At every age, creativity is released when we understand. Clear communication brings understanding and our actions speak clearly. When our words and actions are aligned, learning, trust and love flow.

Class at the Sathya Sai Primary

The school Vision is to be a model school in human values. This is achieved by integrating human values which are in the heart of each person to achieve character development and academic excellence. At school we dig deeply into the soil to reveal these values, weed out the behaviours that are not and replace them with seeds of love through truth, right action, peace and non-violence.

"Understand and then adapt": Non-violence

"The first feeling that came out of us is Love."

The same Love is expressed in various ways. The reflection and the spark that has come out of love is called Truth. The same love when expressed in action is called Right conduct. When this love is contemplated upon, mind attains supreme Peace. When we enquire from where this love has come & understand its very source, then we realise the great principle of Non-violence. Love that is present in everyone is verily the divine energy inherent in all. When this principle is made aware of, man will understand the principle of non-violence."
